I only disconnect the speedometer cable at the transmission end. Yes, there is a rubber seal washer at this end that usually falls off into the driveways one removes the tank.

Actually the tank comes off quite easy (IN ONE SWIFT MOVE) after you get practiced, in doing the "BEND & YANK" routine, required to clear the petcock to frame interference.

Put the tank in place, then remove it. Put the tank in place, then remove it. Put the tank in place, then remove it. Try it three times in succession and I promise that it will never give you a problem again!!
